Jo Kalinowski is an emerging artist based in rural Victoria, on the land of the Dja Dja Warrung Peoples. Using photography as her chosen medium, her work traverses a range of genres from urban landscapes, narrative portraiture, to still life.
Jo’s art goes beyond mere observation. Her compositions of everyday objects and exploration of human life delve deep into the subtleties of emotional and perceptual connections. Seamlessly blending her past and present, she captures intimate moments that sway between the familiar and the uncanny, infusing elegant compositions with a profound sense of connection and emotional depth, forming common threads that intricately run throughout her bodies of work.

In November 2023, Jo self-published her debut photo artist book, 'T E N,' featuring a curated selection of archived photo essays captured over a decade. The collection includes images of the family land as well as portraits and candid moments captured within the home, offering a diverse visual narrative of her family's journey. The book is accompanied by two short narratives, ‘The Nest and The Empty Nest’, reflecting on her family’s transition from urban Melbourne to rural Victoria, exploring the profound emotional connections that persist, even as the traditional family structure undergoes changes.

Jo is currently immersed in 'Toy Box' (working title), an ongoing photographic project that explores a journey through the art of still life. Inspired by profound adolescent experiences and drawing from family archives, found photos, and personal letters this work challenges the notion of the innate visual recall of a photographic mind. The project unfolds as an intriguing exploration, revealing the nuanced layers of hidden experiences.
‘Toy Box’ invites viewers to reflect on their paths of self-discovery, embracing diversity and the intricacies of life, while celebrating the transformative world of art.
